That makes sense. W&P does have a separate column for left and right.
Center is also occasionally used. It has a code for entire body (44), which
I guess you could then tag as left or right for one side of the body. It
does not have inner and outer but different segments of the limbs (moving
proximal to distal) and various identifiable portions of the head and torso.
It seems to me you could use 30 (leg unspecified) and - if you need it - 10
(arm unspecified). Or maybe you could add a new code in line with these
codes for entire limb, such as 35 for entire leg and 15 for entire arm? The
unspecified codes have, however, been used for wounds that cover large
portions of the body section in question so I think 30 would do you for the
entire leg. That just leaves the inner and outer thing as a problem. You
could have left outer, left inner, right outer, right inner for the "side"
column if that would make sense. But I guess the observers can fill in all
manner of body parts under "Other body parts" so that wouldn't work unless
you could also just say left or right (L, R, C, LO, LI, RO, RI). Or add
another column for inner and outer? Or maybe if it's just that left leg
where you see inner and outer you could add leg codes (like 34 and 25) just
for those and otherwise use the wounds body parts codes?
Btw, there are some wounds sheets on tick infestations. And I just found a
demography note on a tick infestation. Do I make a wounds sheet on that or
just index it...hmmm...

Lacey and I are looking at using the wounds and pathologies
body part encoding with the darting tick/parasite count.

They are also missing any indication of inner/outer.
And there is, to my mind,
the problem of "aggregation", e.g. the entire foreleg is
12 _and_ 13 and the entire rear leg is 31 _and_ 32.
I suspect that by the time this is worked out different
codes would be simpler.
The "ultimate" encoding would be hierarchal, so you could
refer to a sub-part or it's parent or (perhaps) a whole side
of the body. There would have to be separate body parts
for left and right too. Eventually the teeth would fit in
too. I have a feeling that nobody cares right now
about having a unified encoding scheme, even to the extent
of integrating wounds and pathologies and darting tick/parasite
counts.
