If you felt like it you could put 'N' Status rows "in between"
all the 'M' Status rows for all the individuals in the non-study
groups -- during those time intervals when the group is a 
non-study group.  That would turn off interpolation and force
the individuals into their groups at all times.  Of course
this would have to be maintained manually, which is sort of
the point in using 'N'.  I don't think it would be all that
hard, except for keeping up with changes, because there's
probably some SQL-fu to ease the creation of the rows.
